PLAKAS BRIDGE

The Plaka bridge was one of the largest arch bridges in the Balkans, with 61 meters in length and an arch of 40 meters (130 ft) width and 17.61 meters (57 ft 9 in) height. The bridge was built in 1866 on river Arachthos and was the physical border between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire until 1913. In February 1944, the historic armistice treaty between the two parties of the Greek Civil War was signed in the office next to the bridge.
